Inktober 7 - Bengal Florican

Description

The Bengal Florican Houbaropsis bengalensis is the rarest member of the bustard family. Fewer than 1,500 Bengal Floricans remain, with dramatic population decline in the last decade. The Bengal Florican is threatened by habitat loss/conversion to agriculture, and by poaching.  Though the male Bengal Florican is more strikingly colored than the female, she is much larger than he.  This is unusual for bustards, where the male tends to be significantly larger than the female and color dimorphism is subtle.

What a gorgeous drawing of this beautiful bird. I love how much detail you put in the feathers, and even colouring all those black 'arrows' on the shoulder area. But such a shame to hear they are so endangered. I hope they'll be protected well, so they can stick around.

Also, I had a look on google to see what they looked like in the flesh, and I was really surprised to see that their long plumes actually come from the ear/cheek area! I guess every flamboyant bird gets their flashy feathers from a different plumage group.
