Class Mammalia contains a lot of the world's favorite megafauna--tigers, lions, wolves, elephants, zebras, dolphins, etc--so it's easy to see how "less charismatic" species get overlooked, not just in the public eye but in the scientific realm too. Rodents and bats contribute to over half of all mammal species, but the majority of mammalogists work with carnivores or ungulates, particularly game species. Here are some very cool mammal species that need more time in the public eye. Some are common, some are rare, and some are near extinction, but all could use a bit more appreciation.

I love ring-tailed lemurs to death, but I'm not sure you'd call those "underappreciated." Still, "flying foxes" are another one of my favorites, ever since I read Stellaluna as a kid, and I like pygmy opossums and tapirs.
