Class Mammalia contains a lot of the world's favorite megafauna--tigers, lions, wolves, elephants, zebras, dolphins, etc--so it's easy to see how "less charismatic" species get overlooked, not just in the public eye but in the scientific realm too.  Rodents and bats contribute to over half of all mammal species, but the majority of mammalogists work with carnivores or ungulates, particularly game species.  Here are some very cool mammal species that need more time in the public eye.  Some are common, some are rare, and some are near extinction, but all could use a bit more appreciation.

I love ring-tailed lemurs to death, but I'm not sure you'd call those "underappreciated." Still, "flying foxes" are another one of my favorites, ever since I read Stellaluna as a kid, and I like pygmy opossums and tapirs. :D

Gotta say that mammals are some of my favourite kinds of animals. I love reindeer and wolverines, but I also kinda like bats, mountain goats and primates. And cetaceans are awesome too. I just love e'm all! :D

My favorites are unfortunately extinct, but I love Barbourofelids and Nimravids. I don't know much about their behavior or ecology, but I find their anatomy, particularly their facial structure (genial flanges!) and convergence with sabre tooth cats very fascinating. There needs to be an Ice Age movie with a Barbourofelis as the protagonist, or something. Then maybe people will care!

great feature of these often side lined guys! Especially loving the Tenrec, ever since I read a book with a whole chapter about them I've been interested!

Based on the amount of attention they received at the recent NA Section of Society Conservation Biology conference, I'm not sure the American pika is all that under-appreciated.

True, but outside their range I haven't met too many members of the general public who know what a pika is--unlike racoon, or brown bear, or moose, which are more popular North American wildlife.

That Binturong is so cute  Actually, most of these animals are really interesting/nice to look at. It's an incredible shame how a majority of them are threatened D:
thanks for sharing these awesome animals' names <33

Among my mammal characters are a bat, echidna and tenrec. You don't see them too often. :)
