"You are finally part of a clan! Congratulations, honor and glory is bestowed upon you. A party is being thrown in your honor amongst your clan-mates. There's a huge bonfire and probably hot makeouts as well as ritual sacrifice! Exciting. Depict your character in attendance as the guest of honor!"
Valcaur is having a good time at his party. He's surrounded by all of Skrekrill's hot lady-vulturegryphs, plus Tahlara, Cagney, and his best friend Briggen. He's trying to romance Rahkamat ("check out my wingpan baby"), who might be more amused than impressed. Valcaur's still got somewhat of a big ego ([link] Poofia incident notwithstanding), and he doesn't have the social skills to tell the difference. He's a better warrior than wooer!
Berra noticed there was a party going on and it wasn't about her, so she's shoving her way past an annoyed-looking Skoda (to be fair, that might just be Skoda's regular face) to get to the center of things, where a pronghorn doe (contributed by Bellicose, who looks fairly proud of her catch), bunnies, and fish are being served. Like Berra, Cagney wormed himself into the party, and is attempting to chat up Tahlara. Briggen, who doesn't enjoy parties, is wondering if that succulent-looking bunny could possibly make this social excursion worthwhile. Though he's occupied at the moment, Valcaur does appreciate the owlgryph's attendance at the feast. He'll probably offer to take over Briggen's next daytime scouting shift, since he knows that will give his friend the opportunity to work more on that weird secret hobby [link] of his.
This turned out really awesome The lighting is great; I like how rich the oranges came out. If you wanted it to look like there was an off screen bonfire, you succeeded!
All their faces- Oh, how I love the faces. So much personality! Rahkmat is frickin hilarious. XD Like she can't decide if he's studly or silly. And Briggen is delightfully awkward and uncomfortable! And Cagney and Berra just look so happy. XD Really, I don't know how many times I can tell you how much I love how you paint before it becomes old news, but it's true- I LOVE how you paint.
Man XD This is so amazing. I"m still not sure HOW you have the patience (or the wrists) to do rocks and feathers XD You really do have an inspiring grasp on how feathers and fur lay. I do find myself wondering if they have a fire going off picture, though, since the lighting turns orange inside the cave
I really love Berraluth's patterns on here, and Briggin's expression XD and of course I love Skoda too! I owe you so much for featuring her so XD I'm totally going to have to do a piece with Val and her in it soon. Hopefully before the year ends <_< *slow person is slow*
I wonder, have you ever done anything like a tutorial of your techniques? Your style is quite different from most I've ever seen, so I bet you have some neat tips and tricks no one else has thought of!
I work in little sessions between class/schoolwork/regular work so my wrists are safe! I couldn't imagine being a professional (digital) artist. Repetitive stress syndrome nightmare!
They do have a bonfire deeper in the cave. Lighting success! Lighting is always what gives me the most trouble. I've been taking a tons of personal reference pictures and referring back to James Gurney's Color and Light book frequently. It's really informative and fun to read.
I don't have any tutorials. I only recently started using digital media and use it the same as I did traditional (with the added bonus of no mess, an "undo" button, and the option of layers), but I feel like I have so much to learn myself about lighting, rendering realistically, etc. I do have a drawing rocks and texturing dirt/mud/gravel without using photoshop filters and stock textures tutorial in the works, and maybe I'll get around to other subjects, depending on what people are interested in/how much free time I have in the future. I get through paintings like this relatively quickly because--unlike a traditional canvas--I can make the digital canvas much larger than I ever intend to present the "finished" piece. If you could see this at 100% zoom, everything would be rendered in a very scribbly, unpolished way. I still want to refine my technique and push myself towards greater realism (without abandoning the feel of this 'style'), but the two hyperrealist digital painting attempts I've made are still unfinished. I get bored if I work on something for a long time without visible progress, so they've been stagnating for months
Haha, it is lighting success! You've done really well if even I can tell there's a fire in the cave, and that sounds like a book I should pick up XD I'm sure it's very useful!
You're lucky about your wrists XD Mine are trying to develop carpel tunnel, it's horrid.
As for the tutorial mention, the rocks thing might really be useful, but I know how you feel about hyperrealism XD I have no idea how some people can do it. Really I have no idea how you can work in such large sizes either without going mad, but I think it's a painter thing! Though now your style clicks once I hear you worked in traditional media more than digital. XD Here I was wondering how someone could develop a digital style I'd only seen in my old dinosaur books and huzzah!
