Final adult challenge for my Windsonde gryphon Kiya [link]

Some Skrekrill louts are massing near the border. Get rid of them any way you can!

Kiya was on foot for a change. She was scouring the borders of Grandesque territory for potential gold deposits so she would have material for crafting, and money to spend in the town of Dale once she learned to take human form. When she crested the top of an eroded hill she thought might have potential, she froze. The dusty desert floor was full of Skrekrills!

They had an eviscerated buffalo, no doubt poached from Grandesque's herds. She had never met any of the intruders in person, but recognized a few of them from gossip and stories told around the aerie. This was not a crowd she planned to mess with!

Kiya had never considered herself a fighter. The few times she had run into serious trouble, she had fled as fast as her feathers could carry her! She could do that again. None of the Skrekrill had seen her yet. Kiya ducked below the crest of the hill. Her heart was beating fast and she was afraid, but she felt something else too. What right did these Skrekrill have to run wild in Grandesque, making the borderlands unsafe for gryphons like her? This wasn't the first time she had run into a scary Skrekrill in her own territory.

Kiya knew she lacked the ability to fight off one of those mean-looking gryphons, much less five. She flew back to the aerie as fast as she could, seeking Titania's two Maralachs, Skooma and Skerry. Once they heard what was going on, they rounded up a quick posse. Aren and Tiberius volunteered immediately. Kiya quietly tried to back out, but Skooma noticed her. His eyes narrowed. "Are you spineless?," he asked. "Defend your aerie."

Shrinking with embarrassment, Kiya laid her ears flat and curled her tail between her legs. It was true; not once had she ever lifted a claw to do anything for Grandesque, yet she depended on the aerie to protect her. "I'll come!" she said weakly, her poor legs already shaking.

Four Skrekrill gluttons were still gnawing at their kill when the Grandesque appeared on the horizon. Kerberus spotted them immediately, uttering an eagle-scream challenge. At once, both sides mobilized.

Both Skooma and Kerberus were airborn before either could be pinned to the ground by an opponent. Aren and Tiberius barreled into the fray like a pair of tanks, targeting the Skrekrill owlgryph Briggen. With absolute terror, Kiya saw Valcaur bounding towards her with a fixated look in his red eyes. She panicked and ducked at the very same instant he leaped over her head to grapple with Skerry. He wasn't going to let that one in the air this time ([link])!

Kerberus's call had alerted the fifth member of their poaching party to Grandesque's presence and Bellicose came racing in not a minute later. She eyed Tiberius flanking Briggen and prepared to circle in and tackle the massive, stubby-legged gray gryphon. Adoerak had the same idea. Having taken to the air, Kiya saw that two-against-one was about to shift towards two-against-three. She couldn't let that happen! Without another thought she shrieked and dove, drawing the kitegryphon's attention. Adrenaline coursed through her body, alive with terror and exhilaration. For the first time in her life, she was doing something brave!

I think being involved in this fight might give Kiya some much-needed confidence. Better late than never. She might even be brave enough to fly to Tookie Island now! That can't be as terrifying as this experience... right?

Your detail is wonderful :) I think the others down here have definitely covered a lot of what I would say. Or perhaps I'm just lazy ;). This is great, though.

I've been meaning to comment on this when I had time, because seriosuly, there's so much to say I could never get it all written down how I liked it until now!

This turned out just fabulous. The poses, the background, the shading, the grass omfg the GRASS. And the story! So many details everywhere, I feel like one of those sheep that faints when it's overwhelmed! It's just a wonderful flurry of activity, with everyone targeting everyone else. With the wings, there's a great radial flow to the whole picture, that takes you sweeping from gryphon to gryphon, and the DETAILS-

The story you came up with is great, too. I love that Valcaur is holding a grudge against Skerry! Their poses are great; you can just imagine Valcaur's beak lunging forward as Skerry claws at him with his talons. And I like that Kiya isn't a Mary Sue gryphon, and is really scared about the whole thing, but very brave about fighting anyway. And of course, Briggen! Hi pose is great, and I could totally see him trying to take on two gryphons at once. XDD

Despite my best efforts, there are no words to tell you how awesome this is.

I love how the picture features a lot of characters but at the same time is not too overcrowded. Great work, and thanks for featuring my Belli!

UNGH! I just LOVE your style. I never get tired of it. I do not know how, but you manage to make everything look super realistic, but keep the personalities really clear and present at the same time.

Your clouds look really fantastic in this one too by the way, looks like a summer storm brewing. HOW APPROPRIATE.
I love Briggen and Tib's poses. And Skerry looks EPIC THANK YOU SO MUCH. He is all 'SHIT, giant beak next to face! Must. Avoid.' I may have to give him some scars from this one! ;}

Also... Go Kiya go! You tussle with them thar Skrekrill!

Thanks for all your feedback when I uploaded the WIPs. It helped prevent this from looking too static :) Glad to include Skerry. I like drawing him!

Lady, this thing is as far from static as it get. It is so chaotically awesome! ;D

Oh, this is neat :D

So many multi-gryph pictures lately! I love the poses in this, they're pretty dynamic! And the detailing is NUTS.

WerewolfStripclub Featured By Owner Mar 28, 2011  Student Filmographer
AAAAAAAAAH the DETAILS! You are seriously amazing! And thank you so much for adding Kerb into the rumble!
The story is really neat too, I love when people add awesome stories to the pictures. It makes them come alive even more!

I have a feeling both Skooma and Kerberos ended up getting pretty FUBAR after fighting against each other, a battle between them would be like watching a battle between two Kodiak bears xD
Ciameth Featured By Owner Mar 28, 2011  Hobbyist General Artist
Hopefully they were both able to at least limp home. That midair collision would be pretty nasty. I work with birds of prey and the injuries they can inflict on each other in a real fight (it's usually just posturing and lashing out until someone backs down) is severe, especially when they dig those talons in and clench.
Susiron Featured By Owner Mar 28, 2011  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Oh, wow, the detailing in this is amazing! :O
And I offer you huge amounts of respect for fitting so many subjects onto the same canvas well.
Squizilla Featured By Owner Mar 28, 2011
The absolutely insane amount of detail just blew me right away. I absolutely adore the motion in this piece, especially Bellicose's swooping and the grapple between Skerry and Valcauroch. Also, I love love love all the wonderfulicious textures and Tiberius' epic rearing pose.
And the story is also wonderful and Tiberius and Aren are a total TANK DUO
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to sit here and swoon for the next five hours, okay?
